Daytime Hunting to Protect Pups from Coyotes | Red Fox Mom

Mom fox must know that something has happened to dad fox. He should be bringing food to her while she stays with their newborn pups, and he isn't there. She will need to leave her pups to hunt and feed herself. My trail cameras see her leave for an hour or so during the daytime, but she is always back at night. She likes to sleep outside the den at night, where she can hear and see any intruders coming to the den. One night, she watches a coyote approach the den, and then she enters to be with the pups. The coyote sniffs around the entrance for a few minutes and then leaves. My cameras have caught coyotes at the red fox den every year, but so far, none have ever attacked the pups. I think they are mostly curious, looking for any leftover prey items, or maybe to catch the mice and squirrels that are near the den. Since coyotes are active here mostly at night, mom fox decides to leave the pups during the day, so the pups are not alone if a coyote visits at night.
