Single Mom Red Fox Catches Fish (a Pike!), Crow & Rodents for Her Pups

Mom red fox, Sage, goes fishing and catches two pike and one pickerel in two days. She also brings back a crow, four small rodents, and a chipmunk or small bird; it is hard to tell. After counting the fox pups from my camera cards on May 1st, I realized one was missing. There are only 6. So I look back at all the footage to find out when the last time all seven were together in front of the cameras was. Then I watch all the footage to see if I can figure out what happened. I see mom fox leave to go hunting after she nurses, and I watch the pups playing alone by the den. In one of the videos, there is an attack on a pup. There is no video of the pup being attacked, but rather a video of the surviving pups watching and listening to the attack and then hiding quickly in the den. I am posting it with a warning just before. You can skip over it if you prefer. It is short, thankfully. I am curious if anyone can tell what attacked the pup? My guess would be a coyote or a bird of prey, like an owl. But I am not sure. About three hours later, mom returns with a small rodent and then inspects the area in the direction of the attack before leaving to go hunting again. In 12 years of watching foxes with trail cameras, I have never seen an attack on a pup at the den, because there have always been two parents. One babysits them and one hunts for them. Sage does not have that option because her mate was killed by a neighbor. And this, sadly, is the result. Mom and her remaining 6 pups still have a story to tell, so happier videos will be coming soon! This footage is from April 29th to May 2nd; the pups are almost 2 months old.
