44: Practical Strategies to Teach Text Structure

Compare or Contrast - Cause or Effect - Simple Description – Problem or Solution - A Sequence?…Oh MY! This session outlines practical strategies teachers can use in classrooms to help students identify the text structure in text to summarize its contents, to enhance understanding of the text, and overall learning. Grades 3 - 12 Objectives: Participants will be able to: Describe how text structure icons and student-friendly definitions can be used in classrooms to help students discriminate between text structure types. Identify the text structure in student texts to determine how “signal-words” help students identify the text structure and more deeply understand what is being read. Explain how text structure can support quality summaries about what was read.
