32: The Neuroscience of Learning to Read and Sources of Reading Difficulties

From decoding words to building vocabulary and comprehending text, understanding the brain gives us a picture into learning and instruction. This presentation will focus on several strands of research on developing reading skills and roots of reading difficulties and unpacking the importance of tying intervention to diagnostic assessments. Grades K - 6 Objectives: Participants will be able to: Explain what are the underlying factors that lead to difficulties in learning to read and write. Explain why background knowledge and experience are critical to the process of comprehension and how that relates to being responsive to student's lives in their communities.
