42: Teaching Is Building Memory: Creating Effective Literacy Instruction

Learning is creating long-term memory. We can teach reading more effectively, especially to struggling readers, when we understand memory. This session demonstrates examples of teaching that establish reading skills and knowledge in long-term memory. It also examines the vital role of practice and its support for weak working memory. Grades K - 6 Objectives: Participants will be able to: Explain how learning is building long-term memory. Explain how effective, explicit, systematic reading instruction and sufficient practice build long-term memory. List examples of effective, explicit, systematic reading instruction.
