52: Taking a Discipline-Specific Approach Toward Literary Texts
Adolescent readers often encounter literary texts marked by symbolic density, structural complexity, and multiple layers of meaning. This session offers a clear, discipline-specific approach to help students make sense of those challenging works. Participants will learn how to support readers in analyzing language, structure, and perspective to help them explain what they see, discuss what it means, and explore the human experience at the center of complex literature. Grades 6-12 Objectives: Participants will be able to: Describe instructional strategies that teach students to analyze language devices (e.g., figurative language, diction, imagery, tone) in complex literary texts by identifying at least two instructional moves or text-dependent questions that address meaning and emotion. Demonstrate how to examine structural features of literary texts (e.g., organization, pacing, shifts in perspective) by developing or selecting at least two questions or activities that support deeper comprehension. Demonstrate how to apply critical lenses (e.g., cultural, historical, ethical, or social perspectives) to interpret viewpoints and the human experience in literature by outlining an instructional task or discussion prompt that requires evidence-based interpretation.
