Ex-double murder accused gunned down near bar two weeks after freedom

A man who walked out of court a free citizen earlier this month after being acquitted of a double murder has been shot and killed in Maracas, St Joseph, bringing a violent end to a legal saga that spanned more than six years. Warren Small, 40, also known as "Quincy" and "Blacks," was fatally shot on Sunday June 21st near Khalid & Sons Bar and Lounge along Royal Road, Maracas. His killing came just 16 days after a High Court judge cleared him of two counts of murder and related firearm offences stemming from a 2020 shooting. According to police reports, officers were conducting enquiries in the district around 5:45 p.m. when they were alerted by patrons at the bar that a man had been shot and rushed to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered multiple spent shell casings and what appeared to be blood on the roadway near the establishment. Crime scene investigators later recovered nine 9mm spent shell casings, one live rounds at the scene. Investigators believe Small was standing near Centre Trace, close to the bar, around 5:40 p.m. when a vehicle pulled alongside him. Moments later, a barrage of gunfire erupted. The vehicle sped away from the scene, leaving Small wounded on the roadway. He was rushed to hospital by private vehicle but succumbed to gunshot injuries to the head minutes after arriving. Small's death comes less than three weeks after Justice Nalini Singh acquitted him of the March 3, 2020 murders of Darrie Simon and Sharlene Ramkissoon at Acono Junction, Maracas. In delivering her ruling on June 5, Justice Singh found that the State had failed to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Small was the gunman responsible for the killings. The prosecution's case relied heavily on eyewitness testimony claiming that the shooter's identity was briefly revealed when a bandana slipped during the attack. However, the judge ruled that the identification evidence was unreliable, noting that the suspect's face had been largely concealed and that the witness had only a fleeting opportunity to observe the gunman during a highly stressful incident. Now, less than three weeks later, he has become the victim of a murder investigation of his own. Police have not disclosed a motive for the killing, and no arrests have been made.
