Ease the Load

Limhi inherited a broken kingdom. His people, descendants of a group that had gone back to the land of Nephi, had fallen under Lamanite bondage, forced to hand over half of everything they owned and driven like animals under heavy burdens. Three times they took up arms to break free, and three times they were slaughtered, until there was nothing left but mourning, widows, and orphans, and at last they humbled themselves before God. Then a search party arrived from Zarahemla and found them, and for the first time they knew their brethren still lived and there was somewhere to escape to. They covenanted to serve the Lord, and their deliverance came not by the sword but by a quiet trick in the dark: they gathered their flocks and their families, got the Lamanite guards drunk on wine, and while the guards slept they slipped away by night into the wilderness, and the Lord led them home to Zarahemla. The Lord hears the humble and He works in the night. He eased the load, and He led us all home down the wilderness road. Mosiah 7 through 22. Lyrics: They put the yoke upon us and they took half of all, Drove us down like the cattle at the enemy's call. We were sons of a proud land but we withered in the chains, And we buried our fighters till there's nobody remains. We rose up three times and three times we fell, Till there was nothing left but the widows to tell. Ease the load, ease the load, We are bent to the breaking on this bondage road. Lift the burden, break the band that we've borne, O Lord, come and find us, for our people are worn. Ease the load. Then a band came searching from the land far away, And they found us in our sorrow and they showed us the way. There's a people in Zarahemla, our brethren, alive, And a road through the wild if we're willing to survive. So we bowed to the Lord and we made Him our vow, And we waited for the night that would set us free somehow. Ease the load, ease the load, There's a hope on the far end of this bondage road. Lift the burden, break the band that we've borne, For the Lord's gonna find us though our people are worn. Ease the load. So we gathered up the flocks and we gathered up the grain, And we filled the guards with wine till they couldn't stay awake. Then we slipped through the dark with our children in our arms, Past the sleeping and the drunken, and we sounded no alarms. Not a sword, not a shout, not a torch in the night, Just a people and their God moving quiet toward the light. He eased the load, He eased the load, And He carried us home down the wilderness road. He lifted the burden, He broke the band that we'd borne, And He led us to our brethren though our people were worn. He eased the load. So remember, O remember, when the chains are on tight, That the Lord hears the humble and He works in the night. He eased the load, He eased the load, And He led us all home down the wilderness road. #BookOfMormon #LDS #ComeFollowMe #Scripture
