A People’s Promise

A PEOPLE'S PROMISE (the Anti-Nephi-Lehies burying their weapons) These were once men of the sword who had shed the blood of their own brothers, until the word of God found them and washed them clean, and they could not go back to who they had been. To prove it, they dug deep into the earth and buried their weapons, every last one, and covenanted never to shed blood again. When their old enemies came marching for them, they did not dig their swords back up. They walked out unarmed, knelt down in the open, and praised God as the swords fell on them. Over a thousand were slain where they prayed, and not one raised a hand. But something broke in the men who came to kill them. Many threw down their own weapons and wept, and more were brought to God that day by a people's refusal to fight than were ever won by the sword. The peace that we chose is a peace we will keep.
