Treno alta-velocità in bici (Torino-Milano con Italo)
Traveling is wonderful! Today I'm taking a bike ride on the high-speed train. Here's my experience. Chapters 00:00 - Introduction 00:12 - Preparing the bike 01:14 - Luggage 02:10 - High-speed train by bike 04:48 - How was the trip? 05:47 - Final thoughts Preparing the bike Last year I tried traveling by train with my bike. That time, I got a clear idea of the advantages and disadvantages. With a full-size bike, the main disadvantage is not being able to take every train. You have to look for ones with a carriage designated for bike transportation. These are usually the slowest, and the carriage (although listed on the website) isn't always available. For this reason, I decided to buy a folding bike. With one, you can ride any train and, in some cases, even a plane! This reduces the risk of being stranded by delays and natural disasters. For this trip, I modified a "fake Brompton," a bike that was once worthless, but has now become a gem! It folds in three places, making it incredibly small and easy to carry. Luggage Since it was a business trip, I didn't need to carry much, so I preferred not to use side bags. I opted for a classic, roomy backpack. I hate carrying a backpack on my shoulders when I ride (it hurts after a while and makes me sweat). For carrying, I used the rack, which in this case is part of the bike frame. I placed the backpack on it and tied it with paracord (but any type of cord will do). My backpack The contents of my backpack were simple: spare inner tube tire changing tools heavy U-lock lightweight wire lock food and water spare clothes (shirt, deodorant, wipes, etc.) power bank, charger, and USB cables bike bag (I'll explain later) High-speed train by bike For this trip, I opted for the Italo Turin-Milan high-speed train. But it would have been the same if I took a Trenitalia train. The rules are simple: you can bring a folding bike as carry-on luggage as long as it's closed and stored in the appropriate bag. It takes me less than five minutes to untie my backpack, fold the bike, and put it in the bag. In my case, I also have to tie the bike (with the rope removed from the backpack) because it doesn't have a system to keep it closed. The train regulations don't specify what type of bag to use; I bought a standard one online. They don't even say where to store it, but common sense always applies. As long as it doesn't get in the way. On the outward journey, I managed to stow it in the overhead locker, so I didn't even have to tie it up. On the return journey, however, there wasn't enough room, so I left it at the back of the carriage (there's usually room for suitcases) and tied it to the metal bumper at the bottom. Final Thoughts Traveling is always wonderful! Having this experience of cycling on the train was rewarding. I discovered that it can be done without too many problems, and this encourages me to plan another trip as soon as possible. Of course, there were some setbacks here too, like an hour and a half delay on departure, but luckily I didn't have to make any connections.
