With this DIY front rack, I'll no longer have problems carrying the kids' backpacks to school in the morning. DIY Front Rack In previous episodes, we saw how to build a DIY cargo bike. As I mentioned, I need it to take the kids to school because the trailer just doesn't fit anymore. The cargo bike was a success, but I still had one problem: how to carry the kids' school bags? I preferred to avoid adding any extra weight (no matter how small) to the rear rack. I didn't even want to hang them from the seats because it would have made balancing the bike difficult. Basically, there was no room at the back! All that remained was to face the front of the bike, but I was missing a front bike rack in my garage. Of course, I know there are already thousands of affordable versions on the market. However, I was intrigued to build one myself, and in fact, I found many plans for it. I chose a design that uses a thin aluminum bar and doesn't require any welding. Welding this metal requires an open flame, which I prefer to avoid for safety reasons. Otherwise, you'll need a TIG welder, which is too expensive for me right now. The project is really simple: just create a rectangle of aluminum by bending the metal. It's done by hand because it's very light and ductile. I then added two more bars for horizontal support and two arms that connect the whole thing to the wheel hub. Final considerations I'm very satisfied with the result. The rack is very stable and easily supports the weight of the items I want to carry. Despite being made from a small aluminum bar, it's sturdy and doesn't cause any balancing issues for the cargo bike.
