Come costruire una cargobike (parte 1) #cargobike #cargo #diy
Let's see how to build a longtail cargo bike. I'll tell you all the problems I faced and the solutions I implemented in this project. Some time ago, I realized that my kids had outgrown their bike trailer. I needed a quick solution, so I decided to build a cargo bike. I found a project online and got to work right away. Everything you need and "how to build a cargo bike" Let's start with what you need to build this project. Since I had to build a long seat/rack (a longtail, in fact), it was clear I needed to remove the dust that had accumulated on my electrode welder. I'm not very experienced, so I used rutolytic electrodes, which are the easiest for beginners. Disclaimer Before continuing: I recommend using PPE (personal protective equipment). It should be functional for the project you're working on and of excellent quality. In my case, I installed an extractor fan (500 liters per hour), an auto-darkening welding helmet, a welding apron and gloves, and a mask with metal dust filters. I could only weld iron and steel, so I chose the latter because it's lighter and more durable. There are various types, but I wasn't picky. After all, this project wasn't meant to last forever. I needed steel bikes, but I didn't know how to identify them. Sustainability and Reuse First, I bought a secondhand steel bike and salvaged the frame from a €20 bike I'd restored some time ago. I went to the basement and looked for materials to reuse. I found an old coat hanger we no longer used and the legs of an Ikea desk. Both are magnetic and lightweight. How to Build a Cargo Bike Let's examine the work section by section. For each part, I'll add the problems I encountered and how they were solved. The Luggage Rack Once I had gathered all the materials, I built a wooden frame to help me align the sections of the coat rack. I joined them with the electrode welder, forming the seat of the luggage rack. I connected this part to the "€20 bike frame" and then added the oblique supports that I salvaged from an Ikea desk. My problem with this was my lack of familiarity with the electrode welder. Furthermore, the coat rack was very thin, and I made holes in several places (which I then filled with the electrode itself). A Touch of Style Once the frame was complete, I stripped each part with a drill and brush (this time I had neither the desire nor the time for chemical paint stripper). And thanks to my 50-liter compressor, I then applied a coat of primer, followed by two coats of red paint with a glossy finish. This time I used water-based paints because they're more eco-friendly, though perhaps less resistant to impacts and weather. The color isn't exactly the same, but I like the idea of it being noticeable. [...] Full article on the project's official website. To anyone who's about to recommend using an internal derailleur gear or a freewheel: I tried, but the space between the rack hooks and the threaded steel bar isn't enough. And I don't want to weld additional parts onto the "towing frame." Final Thoughts I thoroughly enjoyed this "how to build a cargo bike" project, and I can't deny the joy I felt during the initial tests. I faced many problems, some of which were brilliantly resolved only with the help of a dear friend who's much more experienced than I am. The rideability is perfect, and you can definitely see the difference between this and a traditional bike. Despite the additions, it remains lightweight and the structure is solid.
