The Battle of Kawagoe Castle (Kawagoe Night Battle) took place in April 1546, five years after Hojo Ujiyasu inherited the family headship. At the time Ujiyasu inherited the family headship, the Hojo clan was surrounded by hostile forces, including the Imagawa, Takeda, Ogigayatsu-Uesugi, Yamanouchi-Uesugi, and Satomi, and Ujiyasu was constantly fighting these forces. Having just inherited the family headship, Ujiyasu came into conflict with the Ogigayatsu-Uesugi and Yamanouchi-Uesugi over Kawagoe Castle. The two Uesugi clans allied with Imagawa Yoshimoto and plotted to pincer Ujiyasu from the east and west. In September 1546, Yamanouchi-Uesugi Norimasa and Ogigayatsu-Uesugi Tomosada led an attack on Kawagoe Castle, which was in Hojo territory. Furthermore, Ashikaga Haruuji, the Kofu-kubo, also joined the battle, and the three-way alliance laid siege to Kawagoe Castle. Ujiyasu gave up fighting Imagawa Yoshimoto and relentlessly appealed to the allied forces for peace, but his appeal was unsuccessful. Then, on the night of April 20, 1546 (Tenbun 15), hostilities finally broke out. Ujiyasu launched a night attack with 8,000 soldiers, dealing a major blow to the allied forces, including the death of one of his commanders, Ogigayatsu Uesugi Tomosada, and defeating them. The Ogigayatsu Uesugi clan, the Yamanouchi Uesugi clan, and the Koga kubo suffered major defeats and began to decline. Meanwhile, the Hojo clan's power expanded, and they would go on to reign as the greatest power in the Kanto region.
