~Battles for Tosa Hegemony~ Fall of the Motoyama Clan, Fall of the Aki Clan, Fall of the Tosa Ichijo Clan Chosokabe Motochika succeeded to the family headship in 1560, defeated Motoyama Shigetatsu, and gained control of central Tosa. He then fought Aki Kunitora and won the Battle of Yatsuryu, capturing most of Aki County. Meanwhile, Ichijo Kanesada of western Tosa was neglecting government affairs, so Motochika secretly collaborated with Ichijo's retainers to force Kanesada into retirement and exile him to Bungo. Instead, he appointed him head of the family to handle domestic affairs. However, after retiring, Kanesada, with the help of Otomo Sōrin, raised an army and clashed with Chosokabe Motochika's forces at the Battle of Shimanto River. Chosokabe Motochika 7,300 vs. Ichijo Kanesada 3,500. Motochika divided his forces into two groups and defeated the Ichijo forces, capturing Kurimoto Castle and pacifying Hata County.
