(1) Introduction Depression gradually stabilizes with continued treatment, eventually reaching a period called the recovery phase. However, rushing to "return to society quickly" during this recovery phase often has the opposite effect. What is truly needed during the recovery phase is steady rehabilitation. Depression is not simply a feeling of sadness, but rather a dysfunction at the brain level caused by a serotonin deficiency, etc. The symptoms are incredibly diverse, ranging from "mental symptoms" such as low mood, anxiety, and decreased motivation, to "physical symptoms" such as nausea, dizziness, and loss of appetite, and even "brain dysfunction" affecting concentration and judgment. Treatment is based on "rest," which allows the mind and body to rest properly, and combines "pharmacotherapy" with antidepressants and "psychotherapy" to review stress coping mechanisms and thought patterns. The course of depression generally follows three stages: the "acute phase," where anxiety and depression are severe and rest should be the top priority; the "recovery phase," where symptoms subside but activity levels do not increase easily; and the "relapse prevention phase," where significant improvement is achieved, and reintegration into society is pursued while preventing relapse. This time, we will introduce three important rehabilitation concepts for navigating the particularly challenging "recovery phase." (2) Focus on rehabilitation rather than rushing to confront the problem The recovery phase is a time when feelings begin to stabilize, but it is also a period when it is difficult to see results from activities. How you overcome this stage will greatly influence your subsequent progress. At the same time, this is a time when you can feel improvement as your anxiety subsides and you become more active. However, this feeling of "getting better" can sometimes be a trap. Because you're feeling better, you might want to return to work quickly, or you might feel anxious about inconveniencing others—these kinds of impatience are characteristic of this period. However, if you rush into tackling "face-to-face" situations like work or relationships, you'll place too much strain on your mind and body, which haven't fully recovered yet. This can lead to a relapse or even a rebound in symptoms, so caution is necessary. The recovery period may seem like you've recovered, but in reality, you're still vulnerable. That's why it's crucial to build up a solid foundation through steady rehabilitation before tackling face-to-face situations. Instead of suddenly increasing the load, gradually increase your activity while getting used to it. Only after you've built sufficient preparation and a strong foundation should you face challenges like returning to work. (3) Three Types of Rehabilitation for Depression So, what kind of specific rehabilitation can support recovery? Here, we will introduce three types in order: "physical movement," "mental stimulation," and "talking to people." ① Physical Movement As you enter the recovery phase, even if your symptoms subside, you may face the problem of difficulty regaining motivation. A characteristic of this period is that activity levels tend to remain low and stagnation can persist. You might be tempted to think, "I'll wait until I feel motivated," but in reality, no matter how long you wait, motivation often doesn't come easily, and the stagnation can actually be prolonged. Therefore, we recommend starting by moving your body rather than waiting for motivation. Even a little physical movement stimulates motivation, and increased motivation makes it easier to move—creating a positive cycle. Specifically, simple things are sufficient, such as taking short walks, gradually going outside, doing light stretches at home, or tidying up. Practical tips include not overthinking before s...
