The Senate Housing Committee is currently reviewing a bill that establishes a minimum housing size of 35 square meters and one bedroom. No more studio apartments. The initiative, originally proposed by Socialist Senator Gustavo González, was introduced in the upper house with the signatures of the entire Broad Front caucus. In the explanatory statement, the legislators say that “eating, sleeping, working, studying, and enjoying leisure activities in a tiny space might be considered satisfactory as a temporary measure, but not as a place with adequate and dignified living conditions as a human right. It would be akin to being in a hotel room.” The bill, which consists of a single article, seeks to amend the current law that allows the construction of studio apartments with a minimum size of 25 square meters. If this amendment is approved, the minimum size will be 35 square meters and one bedroom, with an additional 15 square meters allowed for each extra bedroom. The proposal also prohibits authorizing, financing, and granting tax benefits for subsidized housing to constructions that do not meet the minimum requirements established in this law. Since Senator González began promoting his initiative, the idea has been rejected by the Uruguayan Chamber of Real Estate and the Association of Private Construction Developers. For her part, Housing Minister Tamara Paseyro addressed the bill in an interview with Radio Universal last Thursday: “We are studying this bill.
