Ley de Competitividad y Reducción del Costo de Vida: ¿Bajará los precios y moverá la economía?
Uruguay is expensive. People say so, studies confirm it, and the government itself acknowledges it. But… why is it expensive? And, above all, what can be done through public policy to make it less so? The Ministry of Economy has several lines of work on this issue. One of them is the Competitiveness and Cost of Living Reduction Bill, a 240-article document that was submitted to the Senate two weeks ago and which Minister Gabriel Oddone describes as “a modest but important reform of the State,” the first of its kind since 1995. The starting point is that the State is part of the problem. That lengthy procedures, expensive registrations, de facto monopolies in imports, and a Competition Defense Commission without real power ultimately result in consumers paying for it in the form of higher prices. The opposition received this initiative favorably. The business sector did too. Some economists say it is a first step in the right direction. Others warn that the heaviest costs, energy and logistics, were left out. Emiliano Cotelo spoke with economist Isabella Antonaccio, National Director of Investments at the Ministry of Economy and Finance. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Become a member of this channel to enjoy benefits: https://www.youtube.com/EnPerspectiva...
