Ministro Oddone cuestiona tono en el debate político
Economy and Finance Minister Gabriel Oddone stated yesterday that it is "reckless" and "no one could possibly suggest" that the economic team is "jeopardizing fiscal sustainability" with the announced social security measures. "They are crossing lines that I, as an analyst, have never seen," he declared while speaking at a luncheon organized by the Marketing Executives Association (ADM). "In recent weeks, we have crossed lines that compromise Uruguay's economic stability by engaging in a domestic debate. I have had to dedicate several weeks—I acknowledge that this is due to some communication errors by the government, for which I take responsibility—to explaining to people abroad, who dedicate five minutes a year to thinking about Uruguay, that what is happening is not as it is being discussed. This is partly due to our own communication errors, but also to the state of the economic and financial debate, which involves not only the political system but also the private sector, corporations, and private analysts who, in my opinion, have not risen to the occasion." In this regard, and referring to the opposition's criticism on this issue, he added, "In recent weeks, we have crossed lines that compromise Uruguay's economic stability by engaging in a domestic debate. I have also had to dedicate several weeks—I acknowledge that this is due to some communication errors by the government, which I take responsibility for—to explaining to a group of people abroad that what is happening is not as it appears to be being discussed," the official stated. Oddone reiterated that guaranteeing fiscal sustainability is the "only central element" the ministry has to "defend Uruguay's credibility." He also maintained that the debate "was not up to the task," not only because of the political system, but also because of the actions of other actors such as private corporations and analysts. Based on these statements by the minister, Ana Laura posed the question: Should the political system make agreements on how to conduct these debates that can damage Uruguay's reputation? How is the "high level of debate" demanded by the minister defined and guaranteed, and where is the line drawn between legitimate criticism of economic policy and statements that, according to Oddone, cross a line and damage Uruguay's economic stability? ----------------------------------------------------------------- Become a member of this channel to enjoy benefits: https://www.youtube.com/EnPerspectiva...
