Throughout the Second World War, there were a number of evil commandants of concentration camps who were responsible for the slaughter of their SS guards. Hermann Pister was the Commandant of Buchenwald and he oversaw the torture and execution that was carried out every day at the camp. At the end of the war he was sentenced to death and was to be executed on the gallows of Landsberg Prison, alongside a number of other war criminals. However Hermann Pister narrowly avoided the hangman's noose. One day the American guards rushed into his cell to find that the former Commandant of Buchenwald had a heart attack and he could not be revived. Despite their efforts, Hermann Pister a man who was responsible for the deaths of thousands would narrowly escape the executioner.
