Adolf Eichmann—the man the world saw in a bulletproof glass booth in a Jerusalem courtroom. An unassuming, bespectacled clerk, meticulously arranging papers—and yet one of the main organizers of the Holocaust, the dispatcher of deportations whose timetables led millions of people from all over Europe to German Nazi extermination camps in occupied Poland. This feature-length documentary is a detailed, historically based biography of Adolf Eichmann—from his birth in Solingen and youth in Linz, through his career as an oil salesman, joining the SS and serving in the SD, to his position as head of Section IV B4 at the Reich Main Security Office. We tell the story of the Vienna Office for Jewish Emigration and the mechanisms of organized plunder, the first deportation transports in the history of the Holocaust to Nisko nad Sanem, the Wannsee Conference and its protocol, the logistics of genocide conducted from behind a desk on Kurfürstenstrasse, and the tragedy of Hungarian Jews—437,000 people deported in fifty-six days. The second part of the film is the story of a fifteen-year escape: American captivity under a false name, years in hiding in the Lüneburg Heath, the "rat trail" through the Alps and Genoa to Argentina, and the house on Garibaldi Street in Buenos Aires. We tell how the criminal was tracked down by blind camp prisoner Lothar Hermann and his daughter Sylvia, the role played by German prosecutor Fritz Bauer, the Mossad operation in May 1960, and the Jerusalem trial: over a hundred witnesses who brought human voices back to the Holocaust, the verdict, the only execution in the history of the State of Israel, and ashes scattered over the sea. The film also addresses one of the most important intellectual debates of the 20th century: the confrontation of Hannah Arendt's famous phrase about the "banality of evil" with the Argentine Sassen tapes, in which Eichmann, in his own voice, calls himself a "fanatical warrior." The material is educational and documentary in nature—based on documents, trial transcripts, survivor accounts, and the findings of historians.
