Worse Than Nazis: Spy Who Turned Her Friends Over to the Gestapo
This documentary examines the extraordinary story of Blanka Kaczorowska, one of the most controversial figures in the history of the Polish underground during the Second World War. Beginning as a young resistance member in occupied Poland, she earned the trust of the Union of Armed Struggle and later the Home Army, receiving the Cross of Valour for her service. Within a few years, however, she became one of the Gestapo's most valuable agents, passing information that contributed to the destruction of resistance networks and the arrest of senior underground leaders. The film follows Kaczorowska's early life, her involvement in the Polish resistance, and her relationship with Home Army intelligence officer Ludwik Kalkstein, whose cooperation with the Gestapo drew her into one of the most damaging espionage networks operating in occupied Warsaw. It explores the betrayal that led to the capture of General Stefan Rowecki, commander of the Home Army, and examines how collaboration from within posed one of the greatest threats to the Polish Underground State. Using archival documents, wartime records, post-war court proceedings, and historical research, the documentary traces Kaczorowska's activities as a Gestapo agent, the consequences of her actions for the Polish resistance, and the investigations that followed after the war. It also examines her trial in communist Poland, her imprisonment, her later life in France, and the remarkable circumstances under which her wartime past was eventually uncovered decades later. By placing Blanka Kaczorowska's story within the broader history of the German occupation of Poland, this documentary explores the difficult questions of loyalty, collaboration, ideology, and personal responsibility under one of the harshest occupations of the Second World War. It is the story of a woman whose choices continue to provoke debate among historians and remain one of the most striking examples of betrayal within the Polish resistance.
