Today we're taking you to the town of Trevelin in the province of Chubut. If you've been following our trip through Patagonia, you'll already know that we visited several communities with Welsh origins, and this town was one of them. Trevelin means "mill town" in Welsh, and it was here that the first flour mill in the Andes was built. Our first stop in Trevelin, of course, was a Welsh teahouse. Many teahouses are only open in the afternoons, but we came to Nain Maggie because you can have Welsh tea in the morning. Here we tried five delicious cakes: Welsh cake, custard pie, apple pie, chocolate and coffee cake, and dulce de leche and coconut cake. During our visit to Trevelin, we also strolled along the Percy River, visited the Regional Museum where artifacts from the daily life of Welsh immigrants are exhibited, visited the monument to the Mimosa ship that arrived with the Welsh, had lunch at Los Troncos, which specializes in grilled meat, and also visited the artisan fair. It was a short visit, but we hope you enjoy this walk through Trevelin! Next time we have to visit during tulip season and also visit the Nant Fach Mill. 🇦🇷🌈 Exploring Trevelin: A Welsh Town in Patagonia | Welsh Tea, Museums, Fair, and Barbecue 🏞️🍰🥩 🏙️ Arrival in Trevelin and First Impressions We began our day in Trevelin, in the province of Chubut, a town founded by Welsh immigrants whose name in Welsh means "mill town." We arrived from Esquel by taxi, as there aren't many buses on Sundays. The trip cost us 500 pesos and was worth it because the day promised culture, history, delicious food, and unique Patagonian landscapes. 🍰 The Traditional Welsh Tea Experience The first stop was a must: a Welsh tea house. We tried the famous Welsh tea at "Nain Magie Jin" (Grandma Margarita), perfect for those with a sweet tooth: white and whole wheat bread, homemade jams, butter, and five different cakes (chocolate, apple, dried fruit, dulce de leche, Welsh black cake, and custard tart). They use local mill flour and accompany everything with loose leaf tea, in a very traditional style. The price of the full service was 500 pesos, very affordable for such a feast. 🫖🍞🍰 🏞️ Walk through the Village and Welsh Heritage To work off all the cakes, we went for a walk along the Percy River and visited the small Welsh chapel, although it was Sunday, so we couldn't go in. We strolled along the main avenue, noticing the rosebushes and immaculate gardens, a legacy of the Welsh and English settlers. We also visited the monument to the ship Mimosa, which brought the pioneers to Patagonia, and the regional museum, which displays artifacts, furniture, clothing, and tools belonging to the immigrants. Admission was 80 pesos per person for foreigners, highly recommended. 🗺️ History, Museums, and Tradition The museum tells the story of the first flour mill in the Andes and how the settlers brought their customs and tools on the legendary ship Mimosa. In the town, there is a replica of the house of John D. Evans (founder of the mill), although it was closed at the time of our visit. We also stopped by the grave of the famous horse Malacara, a protagonist of local legends. 🥩 Patagonian Lunch: Grill and Red Wine After all this sightseeing, we went to Los Troncos for lunch, where we ordered a generous roast beef strip steak, French fries, a mixed salad, and, of course, red wine. For only 800 pesos (about $20), we feasted on generous plates, bread, water, and excellent service. Argentine food at its finest! 🍖🍷🍟 🎪 Artisan Fair and Patagonian Sweetness We closed out the afternoon at the fair in the central plaza. We found handicrafts and, of course, more cakes and alfajores to try. We were tempted by a cake with grated coconut and homemade alfajores, perfect for sweetening the trip before heading back. The prices were super affordable: 650 pesos for the cake, 30 for the alfajor. 🧳 Farewell and Recommendations The day in Trevelin was a perfect combination of history, gastronomy, and scenery. We recommend taking time to visit museums, tea houses, try the local grill, and stroll through the fair.
