I Was Being Followed – Camino de Santiago (Ep. 4)

This week on the Camino… something didn’t feel right. I left early again, before breakfast, with a to-go meal from the hotel that didn’t exactly inspire confidence. After fumbling with the coffee maker and heading out into the dark, I found myself walking through some rough terrain, glad I had my headlamp… and realizing I’d already lost one of my gloves. Somehow, in a place I wouldn’t expect, I stumbled into a small café with music playing and a great atmosphere. A sandwich and some coffee later, things were looking up — until the wind hit. Cold, relentless, and right in my face all the way into Burgos… which, it turns out, is still a long walk even after you get there. Palm Sunday in Burgos was something else. I caught part of a service, found a great restaurant, and for a moment, it felt like a real city break. Then it was back to reality — laundry and another early start. Day 13 begins in the dark again, and I start to notice something else creeping in. Maybe it’s the isolation, maybe it’s the miles… but I’m starting to spook myself. Shadows, silence, long stretches with nothing around. The wind across the Meseta doesn’t help either. I decide to push through my next stop and turn it into a 25+ mile day. Somewhere along the way, a biker stops me and asks if I lost a glove. He had gone back and picked it up for me. One of those small moments you don’t forget. In Hontanas, I meet someone who seems nice enough… but something feels off. By the time I reach Castrojeriz, I’m not just tired — I’m thinking about that interaction more than I probably should be. Day 14 starts later than usual, not because of the miles, but because I can’t quite shake it. The conversation, the story about demons… it got in my head. Enough that I start wondering if I’m being followed. It sounds crazy now, but out there, alone, it didn’t feel that way. Even after I get moving, I’m still looking over my shoulder. And then, of course, I see him again. Eventually, the walk settles me back down. I start thinking about why I’m out here in the first place, and how much the support from home really means when things get a little weird like this. From Frómista to the long, flat stretches beyond, it becomes more about putting one foot in front of the other. Somewhere around 250 miles in, I hit the halfway point — and celebrate with a Snickers bar I carried all the way from home. By the time I reach Ledigos, it’s been one of the longest days yet. But somehow, I end up with an entire apartment to myself, attached to a brewery. Not a bad way to finish a 28-mile day. — 🎒 Most Asked About Gear 👇 🥾 Boots → https://amzn.to/4uq3RrG 🧦 Socks → https://amzn.to/4unjReE 🧦 Darn Tough Socks → https://amzn.to/4dwPMC2 🎒 Backpack → https://amzn.to/3PloNkP 👜 Rucksack / Fanny Pack → https://www.rei.com/product/235580/re... 🥾 Walking Poles → https://www.rei.com/product/251371/re... 🧳 Osprey Airporter → https://amzn.to/49bJd6E 🔌 Foldable Magnetic Wireless Charger → https://amzn.to/4ugUuuM 🌧️ Patagonia Rain Jacket → https://www.rei.com/product/201548/pa... 💧 Water Bottle Holder → https://www.rei.com/product/141835/ni... 🎥 Filming Gear People Ask About 👇 📸 Camera → https://amzn.to/4f0ejBE 🚁 Drone → https://amzn.to/4tP0db2 🎤 Microphone → https://amzn.to/4uqWgcB 🪵 Pole / Selfie Stick → https://amzn.to/4cK0Mgm 📍 Mini Tripod → https://amzn.to/4ulydvw 💡 Some links are affiliate links — no extra cost to you.
