Summer 1998. Deep in a lowland rainforest in Sabah, on the north coast of Borneo. A 29-year-old Malaysian graduate student named Wong Siew Te sat down at the base of a large fig tree with a hand-held radio antenna and a small brown notebook. He was tracking a bear — a small, arboreal, jet-black species with a golden crescent on its chest. What he was doing that morning had, according to the peer-reviewed literature, essentially never been done before. He was studying the biology of a bear species that almost no one in the world had ever documented in the wild. The sun bear (Helarctos malayanus) is the smallest bear species on Earth. It is the only bear species that spends most of its life in trees. And through most of the twentieth century — despite occupying a range from Bangladesh to Borneo — it was one of the most understudied large mammals in the world. But here's the twist — the population was quietly collapsing while nobody was watching. IUCN data shows a 30-35% decline over three decades. Driver #1: palm oil expansion destroying lowland rainforest. Driver #2: bear bile trade for traditional Chinese medicine. Driver #3: illegal pet trade taking cubs after mothers were killed. In 1994, Wong walked into an office at the University of Montana. Dr. Christopher Servheen was looking for a Malaysian graduate student to study sun bears. Wong said yes. Their 2004 paper in Biological Conservation became the foundational field ecology document for the species. In 2008, Wong founded the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC) in Sepilok, Sabah — a 25,000 m² facility adjacent to the famous Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. Phase one opened in 2010 with 12 confiscated bears. Today, BSBCC houses 40+ rescued sun bears and remains the only dedicated sun bear sanctuary on Earth. But the species is still not saved — habitat loss continues, the bile trade still operates, and the pet market keeps absorbing cubs.
