This SPECIES Went EXTINCT in 1972 — Then OMAN Did the Impossible!

In October 1972, the last wild Arabian oryx on Earth was killed on the Jiddat al-Harasis plateau of central Oman. The species — the real-life inspiration for the European unicorn legend, revered by Bedouin poetry for over 3,000 years, and native to the Arabian Peninsula for over 20,000 years — was officially declared Extinct in the Wild. Every single wild oryx, gone. But the story didn't start there. In 1962, ten years earlier, British ecologist Major Ian Grimwood led one of the most improbable wildlife rescue missions of the 20th century — Operation Oryx — capturing the last three surviving wild Arabian oryx from eastern Yemen with the help of Bedouin trackers Tomatum bin Harbi and Mabkhout bin Hassanah. Those three animals were flown to the Phoenix Zoo in Arizona, where they founded the captive "World Herd" that would keep the species alive when nothing remained in the wild. But here's the twist — on January 31, 1982, ten years after the species had vanished from Earth entirely, Sultan Qaboos bin Said al Said released ten captive-born oryx from Phoenix back onto the exact desert their ancestors had been killed in. Every serious ecologist predicted disaster. What happened instead defied every scientific model of what captive-born animals were supposed to be capable of. In 1986, the IUCN reclassified the Arabian oryx from Extinct in the Wild to Endangered — the first species in history to make that reversal. In 2011, they upgraded it again to Vulnerable. Today, over 1,200 wild Arabian oryx roam the Arabian Peninsula, and 6,000-7,000 more live in captive insurance populations worldwide. But the recovery is complicated: in 2007 the Oman sanctuary became the first UNESCO World Heritage Site ever delisted, after Oman shrank the protected area by 90% for oil exploration.
