Summer 2011. Aegean Sea, Greece. A 16-year-old Dutch boy on a scuba dive expected to see the Mediterranean ecosystem he had traveled thousands of kilometers to encounter. In September 2014, his crowdfunding raised $2,154,282 from 38,000 donors in 160 countries — the largest nonprofit crowdfunding effort in internet history at the time. September 2018: System 001 "Wilson" deployed. It failed spectacularly — an 18-meter section broke off. Critics said "I told you so." But in 2019, System 001B with a parachute anchor captured plastic from the Pacific for the first time in history. Then Slat's team discovered something bigger: 1,000 rivers deliver 80% of ocean plastic (Meijer et al. 2021, Science Advances). They built river Interceptors — solar-powered barges that capture 50,000-100,000 kg of plastic daily. By end of 2025: 45 million kilograms of plastic removed from oceans and rivers. 20 Interceptors operate in 9 countries. 150+ staff from 30 nations. Goal: 90% of floating ocean plastic by 2040.
