The Wisconsin BIOLOGIST Who REBUILT An ANCIENT American FISH Nobody THOUGHT Would RETURN!

February morning. Frozen Lake Winnebago, east-central Wisconsin. A man sits in a wooden shanty over a hole cut through 19 inches of ice. He has been waiting for six hours. He hasn't moved. What he's watching for is a lake sturgeon — Acipenser fulvescens — a fish species that predates the mass extinction that killed the dinosaurs by roughly 65 million years. Historically, the Great Lakes basin held an estimated 15 million lake sturgeon. Between 1850 and 1900, commercial fishing extracted 3-4 million pounds a year. By 1900, the population had collapsed. Today, less than 1% remains. The species is threatened or endangered in 19 of the 20 US states within its historical range. Except in Wisconsin. But here's the twist — in 1915, Wisconsin closed the sturgeon harvest statewide. Nobody else did. In 1977, a young fisheries biologist named Ronald Bruch took a summer job as a creel census clerk with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. In 1986, he became senior fisheries biologist for the Winnebago system. For the next 30 years, Bruch built the population assessment program, the volunteer program that guards the spawning grounds each spring, and the peer-reviewed documentation of sturgeon biology — including the recording of low-frequency "sturgeon thunder" spawning sounds with acoustic ecologist Chris Bocast at UW Sea Grant. Bruch co-authored "People of the Sturgeon" (2009) with Kathleen Schmitt Kline and Fred Binkowski — a book that won 10 awards. The Winnebago population became the largest self-sustaining lake sturgeon population on Earth. Its eggs now supply restoration efforts in Milwaukee, on the Menominee River, on the St. Louis River, and as far away as Georgia, Tennessee, and North Carolina. On the East Coast, biologist Boyd Kynard has been running parallel work on Connecticut River shortnose sturgeon. Bruch retired in 2015. The 2026 spearing season on Winnebago is the 80th consecutive year of the tradition. Can a species recover when the recovery takes longer than a single scientific career?
