On March 14th, 1944, a 22-year-old Hungarian-born poet named Hannah Szenes parachuted into Nazi-occupied Yugoslavia with two fellow Jewish volunteers, trained by British intelligence to rescue Jews and aid Allied airmen behind enemy lines. Weeks earlier, she had left behind a quiet life at a kibbutz on the Mediterranean coast, where she wrote poetry that would one day be sung at memorial ceremonies across an entire country. On June 7th, she crossed into Hungary — the country she'd fled as a schoolgirl five years earlier — carrying a British transmitter and a code she had sworn never to reveal. Hungarian gendarmes captured her within hours. For months, they tortured her for the frequency, the call sign, the names of her fellow parachutists. She gave them nothing but her real name. When interrogators arrested her own mother and staged a confrontation through prison bars, hoping the sight of each other would break one of them, neither woman gave up anything at all. Tried for treason and sentenced to death, Hannah Szenes was executed by firing squad in Budapest on November 7th, 1944, at the age of 23 — reportedly facing the six rifles without the blindfold she was offered. In 1950, her remains were brought to Israel and reinterred on Mount Herzl, where she is remembered as a national heroine.
