He Survived Auschwitz for 2.5 Years — Then His Own Country Shot Him
In September 1940, a Polish cavalry officer named Witold Pilecki did something no intelligence service had ever asked for: he let himself get caught. Using a false identity, he walked into a German street roundup in Warsaw on purpose, rode the truck, and was processed into Auschwitz as prisoner number 4859 — the only known case of a man voluntarily getting himself sent to a Nazi concentration camp. Inside, he built an underground resistance network from nothing: smuggled food and medicine, sabotage, a hidden radio, and above all, intelligence. Piece by piece, he compiled one of the first detailed accounts any Allied government would receive about the camp's function, smuggled out by memory and by hand until it reached the Polish government-in-exile in London. After two and a half years inside the wire, Pilecki escaped with two fellow prisoners on the night of April 26th, 1943, and later fought in the Warsaw Uprising. He survived the war. What he didn't survive was the peace that followed: in 1947, Poland's new communist government arrested him on fabricated espionage charges, and on May 25th, 1948, he was executed by firing squad in Warsaw's Mokotów Prison. His body was never returned, and his name was erased from Polish history for over forty years — until the fall of communism in 1989 finally let his story be told.
