The Commandant of Auschwitz Hid for Nine Months as a Farmhand — Until His Hands Gave Him Away

On March 11th, 1946, in a farmhouse in Gottrupel, northern Germany, a British Army captain named Hanns Alexander stood face to face with a man calling himself Franz Lang — a quiet farmhand who claimed he had spent the war as a low-ranking private. Alexander knew better. Nine months of dead-end leads had led him here, after breaking the silence of a woman who had spent two decades protecting the same secret: her husband. The man was Rudolf Höss, commandant of Auschwitz — the officer who built Birkenau's killing machinery from the ground up, and personally tested Zyklon B on prisoners in the autumn of 1941. Under his command, an estimated one million one hundred thousand people were murdered, most of them Jewish. Alexander was uniquely positioned to end the hunt. Born in Berlin to a prominent Jewish family, he had fled to Britain as a teenager in 1936, joined the British Army as an "enemy alien," and spent the final year of the war working war crimes investigations — tracking the men who had made his own escape necessary. Höss denied his identity to the end, until the evidence on his own hand confirmed it. He would later testify as a witness at Nuremberg, be extradited to Poland, and stand trial in Warsaw for the murder of millions. On April 16th, 1947, he was hanged on gallows built beside the crematorium at Auschwitz — inside the camp he had commanded. #History #HiddenHistory #TrueStory #UntoldHistory #AlexHiddenHistorian #WW2 #RudolfHoss #Auschwitz #HannsAlexander #NaziHunter #NurembergTrials #WWII #Holocaust #WarCrimes
