She Hid 800 Jews in Her Home. A Paperwork Mistake Was the Only Reason She Lived.

Corrie ten Boom was a Dutch watchmaker who ran a forged ration-card operation out of her family's shop and helped shelter roughly 800 Jewish refugees, hiding them behind a false wall built eighteen inches into her own bedroom. On February 28th, 1944, a Gestapo raid tore through the house — but the six people sealed behind that wall were never found. The ten Boom family paid for it anyway. Corrie's 84-year-old father died ten days after his arrest. Her sister Betsie died in Ravensbrück concentration camp that December. Twelve days later, Corrie herself was released — by what she always called a clerical error. The women in her age group at Ravensbrück were sent to the gas chambers roughly a week after she walked out the gate. She spent the rest of her life traveling the world telling this story, and once faced the hardest test of it in person: a former Ravensbrück guard, asking for her forgiveness, hand extended.
