Why Did the Man Who Saved 100,000 Jews From Eichmann Disappear in a Soviet Prison?
In July 1944, a 31-year-old Swedish businessman with no diplomatic experience arrived in Budapest with a plan to save as many Jews as he could before the city fell. His name was Raoul Wallenberg. He designed fake Swedish passports, rented 32 buildings and declared them Swedish territory, climbed onto the roofs of deportation trains to hand documents through the windows to strangers — and pulled tens of thousands of people back from the cattle cars headed to Auschwitz. When the Red Army liberated Budapest in January 1945, more than 100,000 Jews were still alive in the city. On January 17th, 1945, Wallenberg got into a car to meet Soviet military commanders. He wanted to present a postwar relief plan for Budapest's surviving Jews. He was optimistic about the meeting. He was never seen again as a free man. The USSR denied for 12 years that they had him. In 1957, they announced he had died of a heart attack in 1947 — producing a single handwritten note from a prison doctor as evidence. Former Soviet prisoners kept reporting they had seen him alive in labor camps for decades after that. Sweden officially declared him dead in 2016. Nobody knows where he is buried.
