One of the most powerful eruptions in modern history also occurred in 1919. The eruption caused thousands of deaths and destroyed the area around the mountain. At that time, the eruption produced a thick ash shower as well as a hot lava flow that damaged many surrounding villages. Mount Kelud also erupted in 2007, which, although not as big as the eruption in 1919, still emitted volcanic ash that extended to several areas in East Java. Mount Kelud's volcanic activity has since been closely monitored by the authorities. The view of Mount Kelud is indeed very stunning and is the main attraction for many visitors.
