The name "Prau" (sometimes also written "Boat") is believed to have originated from the shape of this mountain which when viewed from a distance resembles an upside-down boat. In Javanese, prau means boat. There is also a version of folklore that associates the shape of this mountain with mystical stories or local legends. It is said that Mount Prau is a large overturned boat, belonging to a magical creature that is cursed. There are several versions, one of which tells about a fight between supernatural beings or gods that causes the boat to fall and overturn into a mountain. Geographically, Mount Prau is located in Dieng, Central Java, and administratively enters several districts, namely Wonosobo, Temanggung, Kendal, and Batang. This mountain is part of the Dieng Mountains complex and is classified as a non-volcanic (dormant) mountain. The temperature on this mountain is quite cold, especially at night.
