The Marco Polo Bridge Incident on July 7, 1937, was the decisive trigger that sparked the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War between China and Japan. It began with the disappearance of a Japanese soldier during nighttime maneuvers. He suffered an unexpected need to relieve himself and became lost in the darkness. When he failed to report to his superiors at roll call, his comrades believed he had been kidnapped by Chinese soldiers and went to the border demarcation to provoke them.
