Línea Mareth 1943, la "Maginot" del Desierto del Sáhara
The Mareth Line was the equivalent of France's Maginot Line, only in this case in the Sahara Desert to guard the border between French Tunisia and Italian Libya. After the Afrika Korps retreated to the "Tunisian Bridgehead," the Italo-German forces of the Italian First Army, under General Giovanni Messe, would repel the numerically superior British Eighth Army under General Bernard Montgomery for sixteen hellish days.
