On July 20, 1936, the city of Granada joined the National Uprising when the middle officers and soldiers of the Artillery Regiment, accompanied by members of the Falange, Civil Guards and Assault Guards, rebelled against the Popular Front and seized the city from the Second Republic. Things were very different, however, in the Albaicín neighborhood, a housing complex on a hill directly opposite the Alhambra, where numerous anarchist militiamen from the CNT resisted the bombings and attacks of the rebels for three days until their final surrender on the 23rd.
