Bombardeo de Ploiesti 1943, Rumanía vence a Estados Unidos
On August 1, 1943, a total of 178 B-24 Liberator bombers of the United States Army Air Corps took off from Libya with the objective of reaching Romania and destroying the Ploiesti oil fields, whose "black gold" was vital to the functioning of the Axis war machine in Europe. However, the mission, codenamed "Operation Tidal Wave," was an absolute disaster when formidable anti-aircraft defenses in the form of fighters and aircraft ended up destroying 53 of the four-engine bombers and disabling another 55, during an episode that the Romanians would remember as one of the great victories of their air force and that the Americans, on the contrary, would come to call "Black Sunday."
