Black & White Abstraction Challenge - What Happens When You Remove Color?

In this intuitive abstract painting demo, we explore what can happen when we limit ourselves to just one color. Using black acrylic paint, ink, and charcoal on white paper, we create five quick abstract paintings focused on energy, mark-making, and composition rather than color choices. By removing color from the process, we’re able to focus on the core elements of abstract painting—value, contrast, texture, and movement. This kind of limitation can be incredibly freeing. Instead of overthinking, we can move quickly, experiment with different tools, and respond to what’s happening on the page in real time. Throughout this exercise, we use a variety of non-traditional tools, including sticks, a clay stamp, crumpled newspaper, plastic bags, bubble wrap, and more. These tools create unexpected textures and marks, bringing a sense of raw energy and spontaneity to each piece. This is a great warm-up exercise for loosening up, generating ideas, and discovering your natural style through repetition and experimentation. Even though these paintings are quick and loose, they often reveal patterns in how we approach composition and mark-making.
