Build Intuitive Abstract Art from Texture | Mixed Media Painting Technique

In this mixed media abstract painting demo, I’m building intuitive abstract art from texture using simple materials like paper, cardboard, and paper towel on a cradled wood panel. Instead of starting with a sketch or a detailed plan, I begin by creating a textured surface, adding an initial base layer of paint, and then reacting to what starts showing up. For the first layer, I use Burnt Sienna, Naples Yellow, and a little Mars Black to create a warm, earthy foundation. As the painting develops, I bring in combinations of Light Olive Green, Winsor Blue, Cadmium Yellow, a tiny bit of Magenta, and Titanium White to build contrast, depth, movement, and atmosphere. Raised areas, torn edges, seams, and rough surfaces all give the paint something to interact with. They catch color differently, create natural shadows, and help guide the direction of the painting. This process is similar to my earlier video, The Power of 3, where I created expressive abstract art with muted colors and texture.
