Paint 5 Abstracts in 15 Minutes and stop overthinking your intuitive abstract acrylic painting process. In this fast-paced abstract painting exercise, I start five intuitive abstract paintings using acrylic paint with a limited palette and a limited set of tools. This warm-up exercise is designed to loosen up, generate abstract painting ideas, and help you paint more intuitively without pressure. By working quickly and moving every two minutes, you can create spontaneous marks, build raw energy, and explore composition without worrying about making a masterpiece. For the first 15 minutes, I limit myself to a small set of tools — a filbert brush, bright brush, chopstick, palette knife, and color shaper — along with a limited acrylic palette of cadmium red, cadmium yellow medium, light blue permanent, mars black, and titanium white. After that, I open things up and experiment further using oil pastels, charcoal, and ink to see which paintings evolve. This intuitive abstract painting exercise is perfect if you're feeling stuck, overthinking, or struggling to start. Working across multiple paintings removes pressure, encourages experimentation, and helps you discover your natural style. These quick abstract paintings often have a raw energy, and part of the process is learning how to preserve that spontaneity while pushing them further.
