Abstract paintings don’t have to be complex to be interesting. In this painting tutorial, I explore a simple shape & form technique using three softened rectangular blocks to create a hybrid geometric-organic abstract painting. This 15-minute abstract painting limited-palette exercise focuses on clarity, spacing, and softened edges rather than adding more detail. By limiting the composition to just a few shapes, we can create structure, movement, and visual interest without overworking the surface. This prompt is called Soft Block Trio. Using Phthalo Green, Cerulean Blue, and Naples Yellow, I paint three rectangular shapes and soften the edges to keep them from feeling too rigid. The goal is to explore how simple shapes can still create an engaging abstract composition. I also talk about using prompts to flush out ideas, and how combining those prompts with things you’ve been thinking about—like birdhouse shapes or previous paintings—can lead to new directions. After the 15-minute timer, I come back in with orange and yellow-orange water-soluble wax pastel to add a touch of warmth and contrast. Sometimes small additions at the end can shift the entire feel of a painting. Remember—this is a 15-minute exercise, not a masterpiece.
