ICE AND HEAT COMPRESS OR CONTRAST BATH TO RELIEVE PAIN AND INFLAMMATION AT HOME: In this video, we'll learn about a contrast bath, which involves using ice and warm water to treat pain and swelling. The main purpose of a contrast bath is vasomotor, which is the alteration that alternating heat and cold promotes in our body. A contrast bath, or immersion bath, is a technique widely used in physical therapy to improve patient pain, reduce edema, muscle spasms, treat joint injuries, and more. Alternating between warm and cold water is called a contrast bath. This technique is excellent for those with injuries to distal joints, such as the ankle and wrist, as these areas can be easily immersed. How do you correctly perform a warm and cold compress (contrast bath)? You should start by placing the limb to be treated in warm water for 3 to 4 minutes. Use 4 minutes for severe edema. Then, without resting, remove the ankle from the hot area and immerse it in ice for 2 to 3 minutes. This 3-minute period is also suitable for more severe cases. Alternate this for 20 to 30 minutes, then finish with cold water. Although some professionals end with hot water, which is not wrong, as they may have a specific goal to work on after this therapy, you can perform this technique 3 times a day. #hotandcoldcompress #contrastbath #physiotherapy NOTE: All content in this video is educational and health-related, based on books and scientific articles.
