He was a maintenance soldier in the former Imperial Japanese Navy, working on the maintenance of Zero fighters, Shiden fighters, and other aircraft in Okinawa, and also assembling Ohka suicide attack aircraft. Later, he joined the Navy's ground forces and experienced combat with American soldiers during the Battle of Okinawa. He wandered the battlefield without being informed of the end of the war, and was taken prisoner on September 2, 1945, the day Japan signed the instrument of surrender. The series will also feature episodes involving the then-governor of Okinawa Prefecture, Akira Shimada, and Senior Staff Officer Hiromichi Yahara. This episode is about Mr. Saegusa's childhood. When the Sino-Japanese War began, a conscription notice arrived at the town hall every night. At the send-off for soldiers departing for war, they waved the Japanese flag and sang military songs.
