He was a maintenance soldier in the former Imperial Japanese Navy, working on Zero fighters, Shiden fighters, and other aircraft in Okinawa, and also assembling Ohka suicide attack aircraft. He later joined the Navy's ground forces and experienced combat with American soldiers during the Battle of Okinawa. He wandered the battlefield without being informed of the end of the war, and was captured on September 2, 1945, the day Japan signed the instrument of surrender. The series will also feature episodes involving then-Okinawa Governor Akira Shimada and Senior Staff Officer Hiromichi Yahara. This episode covers his time as a trainee at the Katori Naval Air Group in Chiba after completing his basic training in Kure. Only old aircraft were used for training. Although there were no sanctions, "Decisive Battle Education" was conducted, which involved cramming education over a shorter period than usual, and every day was a battle against fatigue and sleepiness.
