He was a maintenance soldier in the former Imperial Japanese Navy, working on maintenance of Zero fighters, Shiden fighters, and other aircraft in Okinawa, and also assembling the Ohka suicide attack aircraft. Later, he joined the Navy's ground forces and experienced combat with American soldiers during the Battle of Okinawa. He wandered the battlefield without being informed of the end of the war, and was taken prisoner on September 2, 1945, the day Japan signed the instrument of surrender. The series will also feature episodes involving the then-governor of Okinawa Prefecture, Akira Shimada, and Senior Staff Officer Hiromichi Yahara. In this episode, he talks about his visit to the Navy Headquarters bunker at the time, located in Kotobukiyama, after landing in Okinawa, and about assembling the Ohka suicide attack aircraft at the Central Airfield (present-day Kadena Air Base). And then there was that Ohka... Mr. Saegusa was assigned to the Southwest Islands Air Group (Okinawa area).
