From Flat Board to Art | Koa Segmented Ring Bowl

A simple flat Koa board transformed into a flowing segmented ring bowl. Watch how small changes in ring angles shape the final form on the lathe. This bowl started as a ¾-inch Koa board, cut into segmented rings and carefully assembled before turning. By varying the cutting angles, from steeper near the rim to shallower toward the base, the bowl develops a gentle lift at the edges and a natural sense of motion. Koa is a dense, expressive wood with rich color and figure, and it reacts beautifully on the lathe. In this video, I take you through the process of layout, glue-up, turning, sanding, and finishing, focusing on how thoughtful design decisions influence the final shape. If you enjoy artistic woodturning, segmented bowls, and fine craftsmanship, I hope this piece inspires you. 👉 Subscribe for more original wood art and turning projects.
