This SPECIES Was GONE From Eastern America In 1962 — Today It OWNS Manhattan's SKYLINE!

The last week of May. Six hundred feet above New York Harbor, at the top of the Brooklyn Tower of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. NYC Department of Environmental Protection research scientist Chris Nadareski finishes climbing 160 rungs and steps out onto the observation deck. Inside a purpose-built nesting box, three three-week-old peregrine falcon chicks sit in a shallow gravel scrape. He has been climbing this specific tower — and 20 other NYC bridges and skyscrapers — every May since the 1980s to band the chicks. Peregrine falcons (Falco peregrinus) are the fastest animals on Earth, stooping at over 200 mph (320 km/h). Before World War II, North America supported 10,600-12,000 breeding pairs across the continent. Then in 1946, DDT was released for civilian agricultural use. British ornithologist Derek Ratcliffe documented the mechanism in 1967 — DDT metabolized into DDE, accumulated in fatty tissues, disrupted calcium metabolism, produced eggshells too thin to survive incubation. By 1962, every peregrine falcon east of the Mississippi River was gone. Rachel Carson had published Silent Spring that same year. She died of cancer in 1964, before the recovery she was arguing for could begin. But here's the twist — in 1970, Cornell professor Tom Cade demanded a raptor breeding facility as a condition of his hire. The Hawk Barn was completed at Sapsucker Woods in Ithaca that year. Simultaneously, SUNY New Paltz professor Heinz Meng became the first person in North America to successfully breed peregrines in captivity. Cade founded The Peregrine Fund when falconers began mailing him checks unsolicited. Between 1974-1997, the Fund bred and released over 4,000 peregrines across the United States. In 1980, the first captive-bred peregrines reproduced in the wild east of the Mississippi — 3 pairs, 6 chicks. In 1983, two pairs established the first modern NYC nesting sites on the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and the Throgs Neck Bridge. They had chosen those specific locations without human guidance — recognizing skyscrapers and bridge towers as artificial cliff faces overlooking prey-rich open airspace. In August 1999, US Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt formally delisted the peregrine from the federal endangered species list. Today, New York City hosts approximately 25 nesting peregrine pairs — the largest urban peregrine population anywhere on Earth. But secondary anticoagulant rodenticide poisoning, window strikes, and vehicle collisions continue to kill urban peregrines. The species remains listed as endangered in New York State.
