AMAZING Vintage Schindler Elevator - George Town, MY

• UPDATE (Mar 2024): This building has been renovated into a boutique hotel called The Leith Penang, and this elevator has been modernized into a generic. Wonderful original vintage 1960s Schindler elevator in a very old run down hotel along George Town's Leith Street! Had researched this place on the internet, the hotel was first opened in 1953 on a mansion and the five storey building was added at the front in the 1960s. The whole place looks very old and feels like frozen in time, which I really like! Skip the overly common Schindler 3300 or 5500 and instead take a moment to appreciate this old gem. This is an amazing old elevator that has stood the test of time for more than 50 years, and has remained almost unchanged since the 1960s. Completely original with relay controls, vintage fixtures and an ancient Schindler QKS door operator. It still runs pretty well despite its worn out condition. The operating method is single collective, meaning that it can only handle one call at a time. Notice that after I pressed nearly all floor buttons the elevator won't move onto the next floor. The "IN USE" lamp on the hall stations is also another proof for that. Not efficient enough but it's suitable for a very quiet building like this. A distinctive feature here is the old fan grille on the ceiling. In fact, this is the same grille that was used in the old Schindlers at the Dakota SIT flats, Gleneagles Hospital and Shaw Centre fireman's elevator in Singapore which are all sadly gone. Also notice that old Schindler emblem on the back wall which has lost its last letter. The fixtures appear to be of the 1950s type. No pop-out buttons sadly but still very nice. Credit goes to John Elevator for finding this amazing piece of gem back in 2016. To my knowledge this is one of the only three remaining vintage Schindler elevators in Penang, with the other one at 66B Lebuh Penang and the former Federal Hotel on Jalan Penang, but the latter has sadly closed down (the elevator might still be there but now derelict). Worth the ride due to its rarity! I mean, where else can you find something like this in Southeast Asia?
