[Rekimeshi], or "Historical Recreation Meals," recreates historical food cultures in the modern age. Today, we've recreated the meals eaten by courtesans during the Edo period. The pleasure quarters are often portrayed as a glamorous world. However, behind the scenes, there was a surprisingly large disparity in the meals eaten by the courtesans. The lowest-ranking courtesans, the Kirimise-joro. The mid-ranking Sancha-joro. And the highest-ranking Oiran. Even within the same pleasure quarter, their meals were completely different. Meals to stave off hunger. Meals to gulp down in a hurry. And lavish banquet dishes for show. Food was not merely nutrition; it reflected a person's status and way of life.
